Dancing, make new friends, social activities and more.
The origins of Morris are uncertain, but this living tradition dates back at least 500 years and there are numerous references to Morris in the plays of William Shakespeare. The basics of Morris are very easy to pick up; all that is needed is a willingness to jump around waving handkerchiefs at other dancers and the clashing of sticks in time to music. Sound like a good time? It is!
If you are interested in joining us as dancer or musician then come along to one of our Practice Sessions and learn a Morris dance under expert tuition. We welcome both new dancers and musicians and no previous Morris dance experience is necessary, although a sense of rhythm is an advantage (as is a sense of humour). If you would like to play for us please bring your instrument.
Makeney Morris performs throughout the year at festivals, village fairs, public houses, day of dance events, private events, community events and charity fundraising events. Some of the festivals we have attended include Sidmouth Folk Week, Towersey Festival and Days of Dance with other Morris teams. In 2016 we enjoyed a long weekend dancing at York Festival of Traditional Dance and recently in 2019 we spent a week on the south coast at Sidmouth Folk Festival.
Joining Makeney Morris gives you access to more than Morris dancing. For example, we organise social events, attend ceilidhs and festivals. You can do as much or as little as you want. So, why not give Makeney Morris a go? It keeps you FIT, it is FUN and we’re a FRIENDLY bunch!
